What helps successful teams progress deeper into the tournament, and how is that associated with their set-piece performance?
The premise
Deeper runs aligned with more attacking restarts.
Across their full tournament runs, quarter-finalists averaged 7.61 corners plus attacking-third free kicks per match, compared with 6.12 for the other teams.
The clearest relationship was territorial access. It does not show that set pieces caused the deeper run.
The tournament map
Three conditions organise the comparison.
Secure the next touch. Move the contest. Or disturb the structure long enough to win the later phase.
These are interpretive categories, not provider labels.
Kick-offs · The norm
Control was the default.
The centre circle was overwhelmingly used to reopen possession, not to launch a territory race.
Short restarts retained the first possession on 99.2% of opportunities.
Kick-offs · The exception
The long ball belonged to four teams.
France, USA, Morocco and Iraq supplied 28 of the tournament's 33 long kick-offs. What looked like a trend was really a concentrated tactical signature.
Preparation should target the opponent-specific exception, not a tournament-wide “rugbyfication”.
Kick-offs · The trade
Thirty-one of thirty-two long restarts lost the first possession.
All 33 long kick-offs travelled into the middle third. Only one retained the first possession; the event record does not capture the duel or next recovery.
The immediate outcomes were 28 possession-out-of-play losses, three incomplete losses and one completed possession.
If the first possession is expected to go, who owns the landing zone and the next duel?
Dropped balls · A bounded finding
Some restarts simply restored order.
Short returns kept possession on 95 of 98 occasions. Long returns kept seven of 18. None linked to a goal inside 20 seconds.
The available evidence supports a procedural reset, not a hidden attacking chapter.
Throw-ins · Tempo
Faster throws aligned with a more secure next touch.
Fast throws preserved possession for seven seconds far more often than slow throws. Each additional second was associated with an adjusted 0.61 percentage-point reduction in continuation.
Throw-ins · The correction
Faster execution did not raise shot access.
Fast throws produced shots on 3.0% of opportunities; slow throws on 4.4%. The adjusted attacking-success effect was approximately zero.
Faster throws aligned with continuation, while advanced direct-to-area routes aligned with shot access.
Restart before pressure reorganises, but do not attack before support exists.
Throw-ins · The receiver
Moving receivers took the first touch 8.2 metres farther forward.
Moving receivers completed first contact 1.8 metres ahead of the throw. Static receivers finished 6.4 metres behind it.
The 8.2-metre difference shifts attention from throw distance to the receiver's starting movement.
Throw-ins · The final 21 metres
Direct did not have to mean wasteful.
Direct-to-area throws created shots on 21.4% of final-band opportunities versus 12.0% otherwise, while seven-second continuation remained almost identical.
The receiving condition mattered more than a blanket short-versus-long label.
Throw-ins · The hidden cost
Throw-in threat arrived later, alongside the highest counter rate.
Under one standardized action definition, 60.6% of throw-in shots arrived at action three or later. Counters followed 2.79% of throws, above free kicks and corners.
If the attack needs three actions, rest defence is part of the routine.

Free kicks · Territory
Crosses and direct shots were almost entirely final-third choices.
Every own-third free kick was passed. Seventy-seven of 78 direct shots and 176 of 192 crosses came from the final third.
The action menu widened only when the restart reached goal-facing territory.
Free kicks · The outcome
The specialist strike was rare. Continued play scored more.
Only 78 of 2,741 free kicks were direct shots, yet seven scored. Across verified attribution, 14 of 23 goals arrived after the initial action.
Assign the next contact as deliberately as the first strike or delivery.
Corners · The norm
The tournament preferred the ball coming in.
Inswing deliveries represented 51.8% of current classified corners, almost twice the outswing share.

Corners · The counter-pattern
The less common outswing found shots more often.
Outswing corners produced a shot on 49.8% of opportunities; inswing corners on 36.2%.
Outswing was under-represented relative to its shot access, but partial xG did not confirm better shot quality.
Why this is not “outswing is better”
Covered xG per corner was 0.107 for outswing and 0.118 for inswing, with incomplete coverage. Shot access and shot quality are different outcomes.
Corners · France
France used the short route more than twice as often.
France restarted short on 19 of 51 corners: 37.3%, against a tournament norm of 13.6%.
France's short-corner use was a frequency signature, not a shot-access advantage: six of 19 produced shots versus 10 of 32 other corners.
Corners · The decisive phase
The clearance did not end the threat.
Fourteen attributed goals arrived in the first phase. Seventeen arrived later through rebounds, flick-ons, loose balls and recycles.
A strict clearance, recovery and re-cross occurred only 40 times and scored none. “Second phase” was broader than one rehearsed second wave.
Defend the displaced structure after contact, not only the flight of the first ball.
Penalties · The exception
The penalty contained its outcome in one action.
Sixteen of 22 in-game penalties scored; every attributed goal was direct. Provider-labelled opposite-goalkeeper-side attempts scored 10 of 10, versus four of 10 same-side.
The placement label may incorporate goalkeeper action. Twenty-one cases support video review, not a universal prescription. Shootouts are unavailable.
Goal kicks · The structure
The restart moved beyond the goalkeeper.
Two thirds were short, and outfield players took 39.3% of those short restarts. The first teammate was reached on 91.0% of decided short kicks.
First reception is a goal-kick-specific outcome, not directly comparable with throw-in or kick-off continuation.

First reception held when build-up numbers matched or exceeded the press.
On decided short kicks, first reception stayed above 87% when build-up numbers matched or exceeded the press. It fell to 33.3% when the press had the spare player.
Short versus long describes the route. The first numerical confrontation better describes whether that route remained controlled.
Descriptive association; opponent quality and selection are not isolated.
Answer to the main question
Deeper runs brought more access, not one magic routine.
Across their full runs, quarter-finalists reached more attacking restarts and retained free-kick continuations more often. Their two-action shot rate was essentially level: 7.0% versus 6.8%.
Advancing teams contributed extra knockout matches and faced a different stage and opponent mix. Territory, game state and overall team quality are not isolated.
