All 33 long kick-offs travelled into the middle third. Only one retained the first possession; the event record does not capture the duel or next recovery.

Crosses and direct shots were almost entirely final-third choices.

Every own-third free kick was passed. Seventy-seven of 78 direct shots and 176 of 192 crosses came from the final third.

Covered xG per corner was 0.107 for outswing and 0.118 for inswing, with incomplete coverage. Shot access and shot quality are different outcomes.

The clearance did not end the threat.

Fourteen attributed goals arrived in the first phase. Seventeen arrived later through rebounds, flick-ons, loose balls and recycles.

Short versus long describes the route. The first numerical confrontation better describes whether that route remained controlled.

Descriptive association; opponent quality and selection are not isolated.

Answer to the main question

Deeper runs brought more access, not one magic routine.

Across their full runs, quarter-finalists reached more attacking restarts and retained free-kick continuations more often. Their two-action shot rate was essentially level: 7.0% versus 6.8%.

Advancing teams contributed extra knockout matches and faced a different stage and opponent mix. Territory, game state and overall team quality are not isolated.

Method, scope and definitions

Progression comparison

The comparison includes all 104 supplied matches. Counts are normalized per team-match: the eight quarter-finalists contributed 54 team-matches and the other 40 teams 152. Advancing teams necessarily contribute additional knockout opposition and game states, so results describe full tournament runs rather than causal effects.

Supplied scope

The evidence covers all 104 tournament matches, including the third-place play-off. Tactical XML and goalkeeper XML have narrower coverage; partial xG is not used as a full-tournament total.

Source hierarchy

FIFA XML governs events and context. Enriched Hawk-Eye tracking governs space. Tactical XML governs xG. Metadata identifies matches and teams. Unified Event CSV/JSON is excluded from production claims.

Goal attribution

The narrative uses verified chapter attribution: kick-offs 0 direct / 2 influenced; throw-ins 1 / 6; free kicks 9 / 13; corners 14 / 17; penalties 15 / 0; goal kicks 0 / 2; dropped balls 0. A separate uniform 20-second screen is used only for standardized follow-up comparisons and is never summed with these counts.

Outcome definitions

Kick-off and dropped-ball outcomes describe possession after the restart. Throw-ins use a seven-second XML timing proxy. Goal kicks use decided first reception. The experience names each outcome and does not compare them as one generic retention metric.

Reconciliations

Current canonical corner outputs are 950 events, a 492/248/129/81 type mix and 31 goals (14 first phase, 17 influenced). Goal kicks use the documented false-positive filter, leaving 1,986 genuine restarts. Throw-in goals use the seven verified routines.

Claim standard

Evidence is directly measured. Interpretation connects the finding to football context. Mechanisms not measured by the available data are omitted.
